MITA - A History in Perspective

By 1998 MITA had outgrown the Fremantle premises and relocated to Balcatta. The 1200 square metre Training Workshop coupled with training rooms accommodating 100 students and two storey administration block enabled MITA to deliver apprentice training timed to meet the implementation of "User Choice" allowing the apprentice/trainee to choose which Training Provider they wish to use.

Demand was so great for the flexibility "User Choice" allowed that additional premises were leased in December 1998 to create an additional six training rooms. These premises were adjacent to the existing premises and are an ideal annex to gain speedy access to and from the Training Workshop.

By late 1999 MITA acquired the whole of the adjoining property to allow further expansion thereby enhancing the quality of training. This acquisition now gives MITA 2400 square meters of training workshop and additional administration accommodation, placing it well to provide employment and training services well into the future.

Who or what is the driving force behind this organisation?
What are the secrets of its success?
Who owns it?
Why does it exist?

A few questions we will answer. Through this Web Site you will be introduced to staff, students and employers through both a narrational and pictorial journey through the last ten years of MITA's history.

The Motor Industry Training Association of WA (Inc.) was formed in 1990 to address the skills shortages, the lack of suitable applicants and the specialisation that the industry was experiencing.

From 1990-1992 sixty-five apprentices were employed through the Group Apprentice Scheme passing through rigorous testing, interviewing and selection procedures before being placed with industry Host Employers.

On going assessment of their performance ensured a quality tradesperson after four years.

These high standards still apply today, the original sixty-five apprentices setting the benchmark from which to grow and provide employment and training options for the automotive industry.

Today MITA employ in excess of 330 apprentices throughout all automotive trade areas.

With the technological advances in the automotive industry and the pace with which they are introduced, highlights the need for relevant current training for both future tradespeople and existing tradespeople alike.

MITA is proactive in meeting industry demands/needs through the provision of entry-level training from the early nineties through to the present apprenticeship and traineeship training for in excess of two hundred apprentices/trainees.

Relocation in 1993 to premises in Fremantle from its original Cohn Street premises in Carlisle allowed MITA to expand itıs scope of training and during the next five years pioneered many innovative training programs.

One such program was an accelerated trade-training program for Automotive Mechanical (Light Vehicle) when sixty first-year apprentices completed Stage 1 "Off the Job" training over a period of 22-26 weeks on a day release system. This represented a reduction in training time of 10 days when compared to conventional trade training systems. MITA gained National Recognition for this program and was awarded a best practice project from the Australian National Training Authority to document and disseminate the successful elements from the program to the industry both inter and intra State.
